The Sanctuary of Lagiewniki

800

The Sanctuary of Lagiewniki is situated on the outskirts of Krakow, the third city of Poland.

It was built beside the convent of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Virgin of Mercy and the chapel where the painting of the Merciful Jesus hangs above the relics of St Faustina. It is here that St Faustina lived the part of her life when Jesus appeared to her, revealing to her the merciful love of the Father.

Pope John Paul II travelled to Lagiewniki on the 17th August 2002 in order to celebrate the dedication of the new basilica which holds up to 5000 seats. When he was a young factory worker at the Solvay factory, which is situated a hundred meters from the site of the sanctuary, Karol Woytila used to stop regularly to pray in the chapel of the convent.
